About the Artist - Made Wardika While I was in junior high, I became a woodcarver and kept practicing that craft until I finished high school. Then I learned to carve horn, bone and wood. Being responsible for my small family has encouraged me to work harder and my wife and a few family members help me. We handcraft jewelry from materials such as horn, bone, beads and wood. We only use traditional tools like scissors, hammers, knives and chisels. I design unique pieces which are inspired by Bali's art, culture and tradition Covering Basic Needs This artist striving to supporting their own or their family's basic needs and improve their livelihood. He is able to give work to others in his community and hopes to teach this art to the next generation so that every artisan becomes independent and stable on their own for their needs. Preserving Traditions Wardika comes from a village that specializes in bone carving, a traditional Balinese art that has been passed from generation to generation. When he was 18, he began to work as a bone carver and determined that he would become a master carver. Everyday he carefully studied and copied the techniques of the best carvers until he became their equal. Job Creator Wardika was a street vendor with an unpredictable income until he joined Novica and shoppers discovered his unique work. Now his Novica sales provide a stable income and he is able to employ artisan assistants to help produce his jewelry. Profound Impact The artisan - Made Wardika and his family and his four assistants and their families are dependent upon the steady income that Novica provides. Today, he earns a living and proudly supports his family with the sales of his unique carvings.
