Description
Voting Down the Rose is a lively account of Maine native Florence Brooks Whitehouse’s efforts to win women voting rights in the decisive final years of the campaign, 1914-1920. Considered radical for picketing the White House, Florence helped win women suffrage against a backdrop of conservative views of women’s roles, political intrigues, WWI, and the 1918 influenza epidemic.

It turns out I knew very little about the Woman's Suffrage movement. I knew it happened, and knew the approximate timing, but I had no idea what any of the details were and I certainly didn't know about all of the national vs. state dynamics. While the story had a central figure in this book, the full path of the Woman's Suffrage struggle was told around her personal story. I was expecting a textbook kind of read, but I was quite pleasantly surprised about the readability of the book and how easily the story flowed. Chock full of details and personal letters which the author had access to, which was fascinating. It's a great window into that time. If you have any interest in US history, this is a must-read topic and this book is a fantastic telling of that story.
