I recently heard Patrick Buchannan, that arch-conservative, on a Roman Catholic TV network, no less, tell a reporter that the United States should impose no new sanctions on Iran, should drop its belligerent posture toward its government and should engage Iranian leaders of all kinds in sincere and open negotiations. What! Did hell freeze over? If Pat Buchannan can express such an enlightened and pacific attitude toward Iran, the neo-cons who have wanted a USA-Iran War for many years are truly isolated. Make no mistake about this issue: a USA War against Iran would be an immoral war. Enough said. My attitude of respect for Iran, the Iranian people and their culture is derived from its glorious art. The wonderful Persian miniature paintings, graceful architecture, Sufi-inflected poetry, love epics like VIS AND RAMIN by Gorgani, war epics like SHAHNAMEH by Ferdowsi, and (most recently) music - all of this cultural heritage makes violence against Iran unthinkable to me. Early in 2014 I purchased through Amazon a half a dozen CDs of traditional Persian music; I based my choices on customer reviews, some written by Iranian-Americans, but I had no chanced to hear what I was committing myself. What a happy surprise! Every one delights me! This CD is performed by the excellent Dastan Ensemble and devoted to the poetry of a contemporary poet, Shafi'i Kadkani, who writes in the Sufi vein. The singer is Solar Aghili. The record label is Celestial Harmonies, and that is what will regale you for 50 minutes!
