The name is given because the stamens protrude from the center of the flower giving it a pincushion-like appearance. This variety, Double Rose, has lovely rose colored blooms, and it has long strong stems that make it great for cutting.
Pincushion flowers are 32 inch tall annuals that grow in USDA zones 3 - 8.
Scabiosa blooms all summer long for lots of color and blooms to cut. Pincushion seed can be started indoors 8 – 10 weeks before the last frost. Or, for areas with a very long growing season, start the seed outdoors after danger of frost has passed.
Sowing Rate 3 - 4 seeds per plant. Do not cover the seeds but gently press them into the soil. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 70F, germination is usually within 30 days.
Space the plants 12 - 18 inches apart. Grow this annual in full sun to partial shade and in moist but well-draining soil. Pincushion Flower is usually resistant to deer.
