I recently saw The Exorcism of Emily Rose on AMC and loved it immensely. But I did not notice the music very much at first. Then, in scenes such as when the possessions are occurring, or when the exorcisms are being attempted, the music really showed. Christopher Young is well-known for scoring horror films, but this one is his finest, in my view. I love the dissonance, the screaming strings, the haunting vocal solos by Sara Niemietz, and the feeling of horror and dread. This music is definitely not for those who are faint of heart! My favorite tracks in particular are First Possession and The Exorcism. There is a violence to them that reminds me of works by Alfred Schnittke and Iannis Xenakis (although more brutal). Despite the fact that this music is ferociously atonal, dissonant, and scary, it is a worthy listen! I would not hesitate to recommend this music! Bravo, Mr. Young!
